EMBC+ Spring School 2017 is over and was again an unforgettable experience. During the 10 days 47 students worked on 7 challenging research projects guided by an international team of 10 teachers. The facilities of the Sven Lovén Centre for Marine Sciences in Tjärnö proved again to be an excellent location for this school. Watch the documentary movies made by each team of students at the EMBC+ video channel! Enjoy! https://vimeo.com/album/4535971

Hej från Sverige, (Hello from Sweden), These last days have been quite heavy, since we’ve been in the laboratory for 6 days (!!!!) identifying species and also making a short-movie that we hope you will enjoy as much as we did! »The adventures of Tim the snail« should be coming to your screens very soon. Meanwhile we also finished all our sampling sites, so it’s 8 in total! The last one had some plastic floating and some litter at the bottom, where some animals saw there something they could attach to. Might seem positive, but this alters the ecosystem! And, very random but, we also found a can with a fish in it, but he was dead unfortunately... These are our last few days here in Tjärnö, so it’s time to get our data in order and finally see some results. At the moment we are writing the report and will present our data on friday, can’t wait… This adventure has been long and tiring but a lot of fun. We have worked with so many great people and soon it will be time to sa...

TRASH IS BACK!!

Hello again everybody! I know you are wondering what we have found since the last post… Well, let us tell you that we had been working really hard. We went to 7 different beaches (W-O-W) here in the beautiful (and cold) Swedish coast of Tjärnö, where we collected all the trash that we found near the shore. Actually, it was awesome because in the afternoon when we were in the boat on our way to sampling, guess what we saw: A SEAL!! (Yes, that small black point that could be whatever but, trust us, it's a seal! :D ) We found a lot, aaa lot of, trash (plastic especially) in some beaches. But luckily, not that much in others! That’s progress! Here you can see some pictures of our findings: a tile, a plastic bag and a wheel, everything with some animals on it! Our next step in our battle against trash, is to look for a possible reason of how the trash ended there and find solutions to keep coasts clean. So, if you have some ideas, feel free to share it with us! ...

Leave no traces !!

Hi everyone :-) We are the most multi-national group of this small island called Tjärnö somewhere in the west coast of cool Sweden. From left to right, there are the representants of Portugal, Belgium, Austria, Venezuela, Spain, France and Ireland. We are students from the amazing, awesome EMBC+ masters, which is an international masters about marine biodiversity and conservation, taught in 6 universities across Europe. In this spring school our group includes students and lecturers from 4 different universities (Germany, Belgium, Spain and Portugal). We are looking at the impact peoples trash has on the local marine ecosystem. For this, we are collecting trash from the shore and in the pretty cold water (between 5 and 8 celsius degrees!!) Besides the usual plastics, which nowadays is the most common polluter in the sea worldwide, we are finding metals, ropes and glass (like beer bottles unfortunately empty), but full of living organisms!! All the trash and organisms ...
